A Pyramid is a structure which is broad at the bottom and narrows as we go upwards. It looks like an actual pyramid if we talk in a geometric way. This kind of structure was used because here most of the weight is at the bottom while only few stones were at the top. With this the structure used to be safe and stable in all calamities. Before the idea of pyramids, no other structure was as huge and perfect as this one. Each pyramid contains almost 25, 00,000 blocks and each block is made up of many types of stones. In reality the pyramids are a revised structure of ziggurats built by the Mesopotamians. The Pyramids of Egypt are the most popular and talked about Pyramids in the world. Their amazing and awesome structures offer a perfect sight for all travelers, architects, scientists, and even the normal people. If you are wondering about “How were the Pyramids Built? ” we’ll let you know the actual details about it from here.
One more idea behind the pyramid shape of the structure is that the Egyptians highly believed in the sun rays and they were made in reference to the sunlight. The material used in the structure was such that the sunrays refracted though the structure and gave a shiny look to the pyramid. There were many types of pyramids. The variety was in the structure of the pyramid. One such structure was Nubian pyramids. They had entrance to their pyramids. A small gate flowed by the structure was how they built it. They used to build steeper pyramids as compared to that of the Egyptians. Other such type was the Nsude Pyramid. Here they had fixed measurements and height. They used to make ten pyramid-like structures in a line. They were made of clay in a circular shape. At the top they stuck a stick which means that God’s residence was at the top. Once the structures were made of clay and mud they used to wear out early and needed to be reconstructed again and again repeatedly. The Chinese people believed in making pyramids whose top was flat. Emperor Qin Shi Huang was buried under a huge similar structure outside Xi’an. Many other famous people of China were buried in a similar way.
Thousands of theories have come up regarding pyramids and their construction techniques. Some thought that the pyramids were built on the wet sand so that they can stand still in all climates while some other believed that it was only for preservation of the dead body. Small pyramids were buildings for the funeral of common people while huge pyramids signified that the person who died was a great personality. The construction style of pyramids has been believed to have evolved through all the stages. Some of the ideas were such that huge stones where carved out and chiseled. And then they were moved to bring them all together to make the pyramid. Also, some say that the pyramids were built from the geopolymer cement which was also well known as cast stone. Some Greek people also believed that the pyramid was built by the labor. Thousands of pyramids stand tall after so many years till today.
The Egyptians didn’t have huge machines to move the building blocks, and neither did they have any animals under them which could help them to build the structure. All they had was man power. Each block weighed around 2 ton, and this had to be moved through with the help of manpower. But, some of the theories suggest that these blocks were kept on the wooden sledges and then were pulled by the human laborers to speed up the construction process. But, the land was not very smooth, due to which moving theses blocks was indeed a tough task and required loads of patience. This problem was however resolved by making the sand wet and this made it easy to move the blocks. They learnt this idea of mixing water and sand in just the right proportions to move the stones quickly and in a very short time.
The biggest pyramid i.e. the pyramid of Giza was built by countless number of workers who were highly skilled, and they used to live near the area and work there. They used to work really hard as they were paid daily until the construction was completed. But whatever the efforts they must have put in, they finally made this massive structure. There was no such hard and fast rule on the construction ideas. Nothing magical took place and no powers were used to create such massive structure. It’s just that they had all the architectural knowledge which helped them build many such similar structures. They got this knowledge through their history. This knowledge was limited once the fourth dynasty was completed because they were facing an acute lack of construction materials to build the pyramids. After so many years they discovered the stone and finally resumed the idea of pyramids.
Talking about the workforce, many arguments came up and were discussed well. After many years of construction, the Greeks believed that the slave labor were the ones to build the pyramids. The earliest periods say that the pyramids were made out of one complete stone. After chiseling the stone and giving it the proper shape, the pyramid was made. Granite was mostly used to make the pyramids. At times, this stone was also used to make the outer casing also like it was used in the Pyramid of Menkaure.
This is one more theory which explains how the pyramids were built. There was a pyramid age where making pyramid was the only task assigned to the men. Granite was highly used and some of them were found lying there in the quarry. They used to transport the blocks from the store area to the side using barges. From the local areas, they were transported using the wooden sledge to pull together towards the site. They never used wheels to make their task. At times beasts were also used to make the work easier. They had proposed various ideas for making the ramp. Many proposed the straight gentle sloping will be perfect for the building method. While some other was of the opinion that steep staircase ramp should be made or ramp can be spiraled up the four sides of the pyramid. Talking about the Great Pyramid of Giza, the upper half of the pyramid contains only 15% of the total stones used and the remains stones were accumulated in the bottom part of the structure. So many theories and so many assumptions were made, and even after all this pyramids stand as one of the massively built structure in ancient times.
Coming to the ramps, they said it was the most important parts of the structure. Many types of ramps were made to fit into the building. Looking at the ramps you can say that ad hoc methods were highly used to construct the pyramids. They had to discuss regarding what type of ramp should be used for which type for construction. Mostly the large straightened ramp is used to support the massive rocks surrounding it.
At the time of making the great pyramid, the stones which were at the base of the structure were not cut perfectly, but roughly. Also the material they used to fill up the remaining areas in between was not of a good quality. Later on, they started using tools and making the stones in good shapes. Stones like granite, basalt and others were not cut by the copper tools so they used many other methods which were time consuming. They used many architectural ideas to make the pyramids. Even today many theories have remained undiscovered as now no more pyramids are built. The ones which are preserved are being studied for their history. New theories come up with new structures.
Thus the pyramids have always fascinated the common people. Many of the answers are remained unanswered till date. History says that pyramids date back to 3200 B.C., when the first pyramid was built. Inside these structures there are preserved dead bodies. Sometimes organic stuff was said to be found. Bones of dead people were rarely found. Now also, many discoveries are being continuously made in search of new theories and conclusions. But history is so vast that you can end up doing research over the same thing throughout your life.
The Pyramids are amazing structures that still baffle scientists about how the pyramids were built. Though there are several assumptions and speculations, a perfect concept has not yet been confirmed.
